Poliomyelitis

Poliomyelitis is a highly contagious viral disease that mainly affects children under the age of 5. The virus is transmitted from one person to another mainly via the fecal-oral route. More rarely, it can be transported by an ordinary medium (contaminated food or water, for example). It multiplies in the intestine, from where it can invade the nervous system and cause paralysis.
